Schedule optimization ensures supply that meets demand
Many projects aimed at expanding renewable energy as part of the energy transition still fail due to a lack of grid capacity. Franz Obermayer of the Fox Group in Kirchweidach has successfully tackled this problem: His PV-storage combination is optimized by Energy2market (e2m) so that the PV electricity can be fed into the grid in a way that meets demand and benefits the grid.

With a capacity of 800 kWp, the ground-mounted solar park is relatively small—but its design is what matters most. The vertically mounted modules, combined with a storage system with a capacity of 1.2 MWh, enable the supply of electricity on demand, thereby solving the problem of limited grid capacity. This is because the grid allows the PV park in Kirchweidach to feed in only up to 400 kW.
“Not producing affordable, sustainable electricity from solar power plants in the first place because the framework conditions aren’t right wasn’t the solution for us. Thanks to the vertically mounted modules, the PV electricity isn’t generated during peak hours around noon, but rather in the early morning and afternoon,” said Franz Obermayer Jr., project manager at the FOX Group, during the opening ceremony. “The storage system then further optimizes the feed-in, ensuring that the PV electricity is reliably fed into the grid when it’s needed. This is how we’re driving the energy transition forward; waiting for better framework conditions isn’t rewarded.”

The Leipzig-based flexibility trader e2m is responsible for the intelligent optimization and control of the storage system to ensure that electricity is sold in response to demand. By integrating the system into e2m’s virtual power plant, PV generation and the storage system’s state of charge are closely monitored, coordinated with market signals, and controlled via schedules. The calculations take into account real-time data from the plant combination as well as current weather data and market signals. The electricity from the storage system is then fed into the grid when market conditions are more favorable.
“This project demonstrates how valuable storage is for the electricity market of the future. The expansion of renewable energy requires not only more grid capacity but also innovative solutions that make electricity flexible and reliably controllable, so that it can be used in a way that meets demand and benefits the grid,” says Sabine Mägdefrau, product manager at e2m. “The demand for such co-location will increase in the future.”
